HUMAN DEVELOPMENT REPORT FOR BRAZIL - 1996

Chapter 1

The Human Development in Brazil

The health scenario

The number of inhabitants per physician in 1991 was 64l, varying by region.

Federal expenditure with health, which in the beginning of the 1980s corresponded to about 12% of revenue, rose in 1989 to more than 17%, but from then on fell and ended up with less than 12% in 1992.

With the decrease in infant mortality during the last decades, the reduction of infectious/contagious and parasitic diseases, typical of underdevelopment, and the increase in life expectancy at birth, the profile of health demand in the country is changing. Hospital admissions for births are decreasing. The greatest demand tend to be for treatment of illnesses of the circulatory system, which is already the main cause of death (the second is accidents, mainly traffic).
