UNITED
NATIONS CONFERENCE ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT (
GENERAL NOTICE FOR
AQUISITIONS AND CONTRACTS
The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio
+20), to be held in June 2012, in Rio de Janeiro, has as its main
objectives to (i) ensure a renewed political
commitment to sustainable development, (ii) evaluate the progress made so far
and (iii) also evaluate the gaps that still exist regarding the implementation
of the results of the primary meetings on sustainable development that have
occurred in the past twenty years – since the United Nations Conference on
Environment and Development (Eco 92 or the Earth Charter).
The Rio+20 Conference also intends to address the emerging challenges
based on two fundamental axis: a green economy within the context of
sustainable development and the eradication of poverty; and the institutional
scenario for sustainable development at global and local levels.
Context
The development progress in the poorest countries could be
interrupted - or even reversed - by mid-century if sweeping measures are not
taken in order to mitigate climate change to avoid greater environmental damage
and diminish deep inequalities that exist within each country and between them.
This projection is presented in the 2011 Human Development Report of the United Nations Development
Programme (UNDP).
The Report “Sustainability and Equity: A better future for
everyone” states that environmental sustainability can be more fair and
efficiently reached if approached through themes surrounding disparities in
health, education, income and gender, along with the need for global action on
energy production and ecosystems protection.
